File sources are the easiest way to load existing documentation into an agent. Upload a PDF and your agent immediately has it as knowledge.
How to upload a file
- Open the agent and click the Sources tab
- Click the Files sub-tab
- Drag a file onto the dropzone, or click Upload
- Wait for processing — usually a few seconds, longer for large PDFs
Supported formats
- PDF — including text-based and scanned (OCR)
- Word — .docx
- Excel — .xlsx, .csv
- Markdown / text — .md, .txt
- PowerPoint — .pptx
Tip
For best results: clean, well-structured PDFs with clear headings. If your PDF is a scan with no embedded text, OCR will still work but is less precise.
What works well
- Product manuals and user guides
- Internal policies, SOPs, and runbooks
- Contract templates and legal documents
- Training materials
- Knowledge-base exports
What works less well
- Very large PDFs (500+ pages) — split into smaller documents by topic
- Slide decks where most content is in images
- Spreadsheets that are mostly numbers — use text descriptions instead
Updating a file
Files don't auto-update. When the underlying document changes, upload the new version and delete the old one.
Heads up
Don't upload files containing customer PII or secrets. The text becomes part of the agent's knowledge — which is searchable. Sensitive data belongs in your CRM, accessed via a custom Agent Action.
